Sounding: Celebrate How Far We’ve Come!

May 17, 2022

This past Friday the 13th, I thought back to March 13, 2020.

I was singing with an amazing ensemble called Moving Star (currently on hiatus, as we’ve scattered like the four winds throughout the two years of pandemonium).

There was some bad flu going around that caused mass cancellations of performances all throughout New York City. We all figured it would blow over in 3-6 weeks, and so we postponed the concert scheduled for that fateful Friday.

And postponed some more. Then we made an online concert, then several of them.

Fast forward to now. How far we’ve come. Healthier, stronger, more adaptable, innovative, resourceful, dynamic, resilient, and loving than ever before. I celebrate the re-emergence of singing circles, concerts, ecstatic chants, classes, festivals, opportunities to awaken sound in the public sphere and breathe together deeply without (or at least with less) fear.

It is in this spirit that I usher the return of Sounding: Hudson Valley on Sunday, June 26. (I’ll also be bringing Sounding to New York City this summer, so stay tuned!)

We will breathe, move and sing as we explore a variety of collective vocal practices, including the spontaneously composed choral form known as “circlesinging.” You will also learn some practical tools for vocal improvisation, such as how to build and join parts, solo, and even lead the group—all while trusting the flow.

My work serves holistic-oriented women committed to moving beyond fear and emotional stuckness to voice their truth, expressive arts enthusiasts whose souls are deeply nourished by community vocal rituals, spiritual eclectics who embrace wisdom from a wide variety of sources, or some combination of these.

Through structured group improvisation and vocal embodiment practices, I facilitate sound healing sessions, workshops, private vocal empowerment coaching, retreats, and concerts that “a-ha!” you to new levels of self-discovery, emotional freedom, joy and creative flow. I am a partner artist at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute as a core member of the vocal improvisation ensemble, Moving Star.
