How are you doing? How is your heart, mind, body? Voice? We’re now in May, and spring is in full swing here in the Western hemisphere. More folks are getting more restless about staying indoors. This is precisely the moment where many among us are being called to greater resilience, flexibility, imagination, innovation and awareness in how we navigate space with each other, in the outer world, and in our homes.
Are you starting to (or have you long been) cranky while living alone? Feeling cranky with your significant other or family? Have you tried singing together? It’s a great way to open your heart within yourself and with others. If you’re living with family, see what happens when you come together once a week, get off your screens for 90 minutes, and sing together: karaoke, open mic, improv games, or even an all-out jam session! It doesn’t matter if you’re not a “musical” family. It doesn’t matter if it’s your older brother who is “the” singer in the family. This could be a fun practice in holding non-judgmental, compassionate space for each other as you share your creative expression.
If you live alone, you could do something different everyday: a sound meditation, sing along with a favorite song (add harmonies!), make up your own abstract soundscape or traditionally structured song. For every million songs that are codified onto an album, there are millions more that exist solely for your ears or those of your other loved ones. Those moments are special. Savor them.
